Summer is time for sun, surfing and some pretty weird cloud behaviour. The Last Wave is a slice of beachside holiday wrapped up in a supernatural thriller. It’s classy French-language telly gone cray-cray.

The Telegraph’s Ed Power thinks it’s not the most original show: “the plot has been cobbled together from spare parts of Lost and glum supernatural drama The Leftovers. Despite all that, it effortlessly charmed as a slaloming slice of escapism.” He continues, “Shamelessly derivative it may be, but this giddy mystery nonetheless landed with the best sort of splash.”

Previewing the series in inews Gerard Gilbert calls it a “fresh take on superpower sci-fi, you might say, and instantly addictive.” In The Times Ben Dowell thinks the first episode bodes well: “Throw in some highly alluring scenery (and an unerringly beautiful cast) and it has the makings of a hit.

If none of this has left you any the wiser, be assured that nobody in The Last Wave really knows what’s going on either. So, a bit like the world we’re all living in then. In French. With subtitles.
